Souls are meant to craft Gerald, but are also needed in Curious Powder. You first use mob drops and reanimation serums to make soul fragments (you get more fragments the better the mob drop). You get the serum for a few redstone and a diamond, but you get 16 per craft. 9 Fragments make a shard, and 9 shards makes a full soul.
